MUSCAT: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning on Tuesday signed 11 agreements worth over RO 1.3 million to install street and building signs across Oman as part of the National Addressing Project.

The signing took place during the Urban Planning, Housing and Construction Exhibition and Conference. The agreements aim to establish a unified addressing system that enhances accessibility, facilitates site identification, and supports digital transformation and geographic information services (GIS) at the governorate level.

The agreements were signed on behalf of the ministry by Dr Mohammed bin Ali al Muttawa, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning for Urban Planning. Eng Haitham bin Said al Badi, Director of the National Addressing Project, said the initiative is part of the ministry’s efforts to unify the addressing system nationwide, ensuring greater integration between spatial infrastructure and the digital transformation of government services.

He added that the project marks a strategic step toward implementing a comprehensive national framework for geographical names and addresses, improving access to locations and enhancing the efficiency of GIS-based services across governorates.

The unified addressing system, he noted, will be a key enabler for smart services and will contribute to improving the quality of life in cities and urban areas. It will also support civil defence, ambulance, postal, and delivery operations, while enriching national spatial platforms with updated and accurate geographic data.

Eng Al Badi further emphasised that the agreements reflect the ministry’s commitment to linking technical initiatives with national development platforms that engage both public and private sectors, describing the project as a 'qualitative leap' in spatial data management benefiting decision-makers, investors and citizens alike. — ONA
