MUSCAT: The Oman Hockey Association (OHA) recently feted the national team player, Khalid al Shueibi, who managed to surpass the milestone of 100 international matches with the national hockey team. The recognition took place during the draw ceremony of the prestigious 55th edition of His Majesty the Sultan’s Cup for Hockey, marking a proud moment in the player’s career and in the history of Omani hockey.

Al Shueibi, who represents Ahli Sidab Club, been a key figure in Oman’s hockey scene since making his senior team debut in 2012, after joining national training camps as early as 2009. His first official participation came in the 2012 Asian qualifying tournament in Thailand, where Oman secured a remarkable second-place finish. Over more than a decade of service, the 33-year old stalwart has contributed significantly both defensively and offensively, scoring 20 goals in international matches, a figure he described as “large and meaningful for the sport of hockey in Oman.”

Reflecting on his journey, Al Shueibi said to Oman Observer:” Registering 100 international matches is not an easy achievement. I am very proud of this moment. It took years of patience, sacrifice, and hard work to reach this milestone. My message to young players is simple: stay dedicated and be patient. Success never happens overnight and it requires discipline and perseverance.” He added

“ Special thanks goes to Oman Hockey Association, Ahli Sidab club, and my employer for their unwavering support throughout my career. Their encouragement has been vital in helping me reach this level, and I hope this cooperation continues so that more Omani players can shine on the international stage,” he said.

Despite his milestone, Al Shueibi confirmed he has no immediate plans to retire. “I am still focused on playing with both the national team and Ahli Sidab. I want to achieve more before I think about retirement,” he concluded

Alongside Al Shueibi’s recognition, the OHA also celebrated other pioneering achievements within Omani hockey including: Eng Thani al Wahaibi who received his certification as an international lecturer in hockey while Mazin al Shukaili was awarded the international refereeing badge. Nawar al Jabri became the first Omani female umpire to officiate at the Asian level while Muhja al Numani was honoured as the first Omani female judge at the Asian continental level. Amina al Jahafi was recognised as the first Omani female referee to attend the AHF referee promotion course.
