MUSCAT, Sept 25

The Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA) began the action of the Youth Table Tennis Championship (Singles and Teams) categories on Thursday. The three-day event featured participation of seven clubs including Saham, Qurayat, Masirah, Ibri, Al Rustaq, Salalah and Al Salam at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.

The local tournament, which will conclude on Saturday, started with the preliminary round and will be followed with the knockout stage. It is expected that this edition of the tournament will record tough competitions among the clubs as they will eye the title of the local event. Khalid al Zaabi was appointed as tournament manager along with Mohammed al Gassasi and Masoud al Shaqsi as members of the organising committee.

This event followed the Under-13 Teams Table Tennis Championship which concluded last week as Ibri Club (A) clinched the title after defeating Qurayat Club (B) 3–2 in a thrilling final.

Eight clubs represented by 14 teams took part in the tournament as the regulations of the event allowed each club to register two teams. In the third-place playoff, Yanqul Club (A) secured the bronze medal after overcoming Sohar Club 3–1. The champions, Ibri Club, had topped Group B in the return stage with eight points, winning all four matches against Qurayat, Nakhal (B), Sohar (B) and Yanqul (A). Meanwhile, Masirah Club led Group A and Sohar (1) finished top of Group C.

Later this season, the Senior Singles Championship will take place from October 31 to November 1 and it will be followed by the Senior Teams Championship from November 6 to 9. All podium finishers across the year’s competitions will be crowned during the closing ceremony of the General Teams Championship, concluding the current season in grand style.
