MUSCAT, SEPT 24
Oman Marine Sports Committee (OMSC) convened its meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Ali bin Said Fadhil, with the participation of board members. The session focused on reviewing achievements of the last phase and setting a clear direction for the committee’s work over the next two
years, aiming to strengthen Oman’s position on the regional and international marine sports map.
Abdulaziz al Shidi, Head of the Sailing and Rowing Committee, presented a detailed report highlighting progress made on local, regional and international fronts, underlining the growing presence of Omani teams in key competitions.
Ali bin Said Fadhil, Chairman of the Committee, stressed the importance of securing sustainable financial support to ensure the committee’s continuity and expansion of its programmes, also noted the formation of new sub committees, comprising members from the board as well as external experts to enhance the committee’s operational capacity.
The chairman emphasised the need to develop a plan for the next two years, focusing on hosting major championships and preparing national teams for upcoming commitments.
Among the most significant events, Oman is set to host the 2025 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship, scheduled to begin on October 25 at Musannah Sailing School, Barcelo Resort. The championship will feature over 180 sailors from 26 countries across Asia and Oceania, competing in a week long regatta under ideal sailing conditions.
This will mark the second time Musannah hosts the event, following its successful edition in 2019,
further enhancing Oman’s reputation as a world class destination for international sailing events.
Earlier this year, Musannah Sailing School was recognised as an ‘A’ Category High Performance Centre by the Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF), underscoring its capability to stage elite international regattas and training camps.
Concluding the meeting, members reaffirmed that hosting such prestigious events not only raises the
level of Oman’s national teams but also contributes to sports tourism and strengthens the Sultanate of Oman’s
global profile as a hub for marine sports.
