Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman on Tuesday observed the International Day of Sign Languages, which falls on September 23, every year.

The global event, which took the theme "No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights", was aimed to raise awareness about the importance of sign language in enabling people with hearing disabilities to fully gain their human rights.

Oman adheres to supporting people with hearing disabilities by implementing educational and awareness programmes aimed to integrate this segment into society through various initiatives that include education, training and empowerment of the deaf.

The celebration of this occasion provides an opportunity for interested parties to focus on the linguistic and cultural identity of the deaf community, including scopes for promoting the use of sign language in government institutions and private sector establishments.
