SUVA: The Sixth Asia-Pacific Environment Ministers’ Forum concluded on Friday in Fiji, following four days of discussions on sustainable environmental solutions and regional cooperation.
Topics included coastal and marine protection, pollution control, waste management, reducing single-use plastics, and combating climate change and desertification.
Oman participated as President of the Seventh UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) session, with a delegation led by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
In his speech, he highlighted the urgency of addressing global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and waste, noting the rising frequency and severity of extreme weather events in the past year.
Dr Al Amri said the forum aims to shape regional consultations ahead of UNEA-7 in Nairobi, Kenya, next December, themed 'Promoting Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet.'
He reviewed regional progress on the Paris Agreement, noting 98 countries submitted first transparent progress reports, with six regional countries submitting their nationally determined contributions.
He urged focus on four priorities: harnessing science for action, supporting comprehensive cooperation, mobilising resources and partnerships, and building circular and resilient systems. — ONA
