Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has announced that he is making a film about Ukraine. Ai Weiwei told the Berliner Zeitung daily in remarks published on Friday that he is currently in Ukraine and plans to stay for another two months to complete the project.

The film will explore questions such as "why Ukraine is still alive and how culture can exist in such difficult times," the 67-year-old explained.

The project is being run by a non-profit institution that supports Ukrainian culture and brings artists to the country, according to the artist.

Ai Weiwei had previously travelled to Ukraine to set up an exhibition of his work, which is scheduled to open in Kyiv in mid-September. "Then I decided to commit myself completely to it," he said. "I always want to know more, challenge myself, put myself in difficult situations."

He said he does this in order to be able to form a judgement. "And then, as an artist, I have to find a language for it."

He added that he has developed "an emotional connection" to Ukraine. "The people here are incredibly friendly and willing to support you," he said. That is why he decided to make the film.

Ai Weiwei remains a figure of controversy due to his outspoken criticism of the Chinese government and advocacy for human rights. His dissidence has led to his arrest, notably in 2011, when he was held for 81 days without charge.

Through his art, Ai challenges social and political norms, addressing themes like government corruption and human rights. His provocative works often stir debate, as does his involvement in global issues like the refugee crisis. Despite risks, Ai continues to advocate for transparency and freedom of expression.— dpa
