MUSCAT: Renewable energy now accounts for 11.5% of electricity generation in Oman, up to May this year, as part of the country’s national strategy to reach 30% renewable energy by 2030 and 60% by 2040.

The General Directorate of Renewable Energy and Hydrogen at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals highlighted Oman’s notable growth in renewable energy in recent years, driven by major solar and wind projects. Key initiatives include the Dhofar 1 Wind Power Plant, the Ibri 2 Solar Power Plant, and the Manah 1 and Manah 2 Solar Power Plants. These projects support the national energy transition and aim to increase the contribution of renewable sources to electricity production.

Additional projects planned for the near future include the Sadah Wind Power Plant (90 MW), Mahout 1 and Mahout 2 Wind Power Plants (300–400 MW each), the Al Kamil Solar Power Plant (280 MW), and another solar facility producing 220 MW.

Renewable energy projects play a crucial role in Oman’s economic diversification plans and sustainable energy goals. By expanding renewable energy across its governorates, Oman aims to reduce harmful emissions, protect the environment and achieve a 30% renewable share of electricity generation by 2030. — ONA
