Electricity production in Oman rises 11%

MUSCAT: Electricity production in the Sultanate of Oman increased significantly by 11 per cent by the end of April 2025, reaching 13,479.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh), compared to 12,142.3 GWh during the same period in 2024. According to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), Muscat Governorate recorded the highest growth rate, surging by 195.9 per cent to 93.9 GWh. The governorates of North and South Al Sharqiyah also posted a 2.8 per cent increase, reaching 2,659.6 GWh, while Musandam saw a 16.6 per cent rise to 128.2 GWh.


In contrast, the combined electricity production of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah governorates grew more modestly by 5.7 per cent, totalling 7,970.9 GWh. Dhofar Governorate recorded a decline of 4.5 per cent to 1,699.1 GWh, and Al Wusta’s output also dropped by 3.2 per cent to 42.3 GWh.


Overall, net electricity production in the Sultanate — which includes purchases by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company — rose by 11.5 per cent to 13,103.7 GWh by the end of April 2025, compared to 11,748.5 GWh a year earlier.


Meanwhile, the total volume of water produced in the Sultanate decreased slightly by 0.6 per cent, standing at 162.36 million cubic metres, compared to 163.31 million cubic metres during the same period in 2024. — ONA
