STAY FIRE-SAFE THIS SUMMER

As summer temperatures soar across Oman, often reaching above 48 °C, the risk of fires becomes a major concern for families and communities. Intense heat, dry winds and increased electricity consumption create the perfect conditions for fires at home, on the road and outdoors.

Recent data from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority shows that between January and April 2025 alone, 1,204 fire incidents were recorded across Oman. This highlights the urgent need for stronger fire safety awareness and proactive measures.

Supporting this, the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) reports a steady increase in fire accidents over the last decade, from around 3,300 in 2014 to over 4,200 in 2023. The most affected areas continue to be residential buildings and vehicles, showing how daily life activities can pose unexpected risks.

At home, overloaded electrical outlets, faulty wiring and unattended kitchen appliances are among the main causes of fires. Residents are advised to regularly inspect electrical systems, avoid plugging too many devices into one socket, and store gas cylinders in cool, shaded and well-ventilated areas. Installing smoke detectors and keeping a fire extinguisher handy can save lives by allowing people to respond quickly to small fires.

Vehicles also face a high risk during summer. Overheated engines, leaking fuel and flammable items left inside — such as lighters, perfume bottles, or power banks — can lead to dangerous fires. Regular vehicle maintenance, especially checking electrical wiring, coolant levels and tire pressure, is crucial. Keeping a certified fire extinguisher in the car and avoiding storage of flammable materials can greatly reduce the chance of an incident.

Outdoor activities like barbecuing also require extra caution. Always choose open, non-flammable areas and keep water or sand close by. Properly extinguish cigarette butts and never leave fires unattended. Children should always be kept away from any open flames or hot surfaces to prevent accidents.

If a fire breaks out, evacuate immediately and call 9999 for emergency assistance. Do not try to fight large fires on your own.

Fire safety is not just a seasonal concern but a continuous responsibility. By staying vigilant, educating family members and practicing good habits, we can all contribute to a safer environment. Let’s work together to make this summer in Oman not only enjoyable but also safe for everyone. Stay alert. Stay safe.
