BIRMINGHAM, UK: kash Deep took 10 wickets in a Test match for the first time as India thrashed England by 336 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday for a series-levelling win.
Deep, playing in the second Test after India rested Jasprit Bumrah, took 6-99 as England, set a mammoth 608 runs to win, were dismissed for 271 before tea on the fifth day.
The contest was a personal triumph for India captain Shubman Gill, who became the first batsman in Test cricket to post scores of 250 and 150 in the same match.
The 25-year-old's majestic 269 in the first innings was followed by a dashing 161 off 162 balls in the second.
And, appropriately it was Gill, in only his second Test as skipper, who took the winning catch when Brydon Carse holed out off Deep to cover, with the five-match series now level at 1-1.
The third Test at Lord's starts on Thursday.
India had never won at Edgbaston in eight tests, losing seven, and they were humbled last time out at the venue when England completed their highest successful run chase (378) three years ago.
Faced with the daunting task of chasing 608 to win, however, England crumbled as Deep ripped through the top order and claimed his maiden test five-wicket haul with figures of 6-99 to finish with 10 wickets in the match.
Resuming on 153-6 after lunch, Jamie Smith scored a half-century but nearing another hundred with two consecutive sixes, he fell for 88 going for a third when he was caught at deep backward square to become Deep's fifth victim.
Brydon Carse provided entertainment with the bat as he went after the bowling, but he was the last man out for 38 when he skied Deep to India captain Shubman Gill who fittingly took the catch to seal a famous victory for his team.
Deep struck two early blows on Sunday by dismissing Ollie Pope and Harry Brook during a spell of 2-22 in six overs.
England may be renowned for their dynamic 'Bazball' approach to batting but none of the wickets that fell on Sunday were a consequence of reckless stroke-play.
