As Dhofar transforms into a lush green haven during the Khareef Dhofar Season, thousands of visitors from across the region flock to Dhofar’s cool, misty mountains and coastal charm. But while the weather and landscape are a welcome escape from the summer heat, they also create unfamiliar driving conditions — especially for those unused to foggy, rain-slicked roads.

Traffic authorities and safety experts are once again urging caution, as accident rates tend to spike during the season due to poor visibility, slippery surfaces and challenging mountain routes.

“Dhofar during Khareef is beautiful but also deceiving,” says driving instructor Fatima. “People come from dry, desert regions and are often unprepared for wet, winding mountain roads that demand different driving skills”.

The Dhofar terrain includes steep ascents and sharp turns that can become hazardous when wet or foggy. Standing water in low-lying areas reduces tyre traction, turning even short drives into risky journeys.

Essential safety tips

“Always drive slower than you think you need to,” advises Frank Higgins, a Health, Safety and Environment expert. “Most incidents occur because drivers underestimate how little grip tyres have on wet roads or how poor visibility can become in dense fog”.

Higgins, who leads seasonal road safety workshops in Dhofar, offers these key tips:

Slow down gradually when visibility drops or roads get slippery.

Keep your AC on to prevent window fogging.

Use dipped headlights in fog and rain; avoid fog lights in rain as they can reflect off wet surfaces.

Maintain a larger following distance than you would on dry roads.

“If visibility drops to near zero, don’t force it,” Higgins warns. “Pull over safely, switch on your hazard lights and wait it out. Rushing through thick fog is a recipe for disaster”.

Hazard lights

A frequent mistake during Khareef is the misuse of hazard lights.

“Hazard lights should only be used when your vehicle is stopped or in an emergency,” says a Royal Oman Police (ROP) traffic officer. “Using them while driving confuses other motorists”.

Prep before the trip

Check tyres, brakes, oil and wipers to ensure your vehicle is ready. Keep the windshield washer reservoir full for clear visibility. Carry warm clothes, water and emergency supplies. Refuel before leaving town, as stations may be scarce on mountain roads.

Mind the mountains

Khareef’s mountain roads are breathtaking but require caution. Avoid sudden lane changes and overtaking unless absolutely necessary.

“Patience and focus are the best tools in your car,” says another instructor. “Enjoy the journey — but remember, the safest arrival is the best destination”.

As Dhofar welcomes thousands of guests this season, road safety remains vital. Drive smart, stay alert and let Khareef be remembered for its beauty — not for accidents.
