Muscat: In a remarkable achievement that reflects Oman’s growing stature in global maritime trade, Port of Salalah has been ranked second among the largest ports in the Gulf region according to the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025. The index evaluates ports based on key metrics such as operational efficiency, container handling speed and infrastructure quality.

This recognition underscores Port of Salalah’s strategic value, not only as a transshipment hub but also as a catalyst for economic diversification and tourism development under Oman Vision 2040.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, this achievement will increase cargo throughput, enhance Oman’s reputation as a reliable logistics hub and generate new job opportunities — especially in logistics, manufacturing and SMEs around the Dhofar Governorate.

Dr Hamad bin Rashid, Economics expert highlighted the economic significance of the port’s new ranking: “A port of this stature builds investor confidence in Oman’s business environment. It also facilitates value-added industries such as re-export, packaging and light manufacturing, contributing directly to GDP growth.” Beyond its role in cargo movement, Port of Salalah is fast emerging as a desirable stop for international cruise ships, particularly during Khareef season, when the Dhofar Governorate becomes a lush and cool retreat. The port’s improved ranking is expected to further boost its appeal among global cruise operators.

“Cruise lines are increasingly selective, preferring ports with high safety standards, efficient entry procedures and modern facilities. Salalah’s new status makes it a strong contender for inclusion in more cruise itineraries, offering economic opportunities for local tour operators and artisans.” The government continues to support the port’s ecosystem with improved highway connections and logistics zones, laying the groundwork for long-term growth.

Ultimately, Port of Salalah’s ranking as the second-best port in the Gulf is more than just a position on a global list — it is a validation of Oman’s strategic vision and maritime ambition. It reflects the country’s commitment to infrastructure excellence, logistical competitiveness and regional integration.

It is also a powerful message to global investors and travellers: Oman is open, prepared and ready to play a pivotal role in the global economy.
