NEW YORK: The United Nations (UN) welcomed the efforts made by the Sultanate of Oman to broker a ceasefire agreement between the United States and the relevant authorities in Sanaa, Yemen, to achieve de-escalation, freedom of navigation and the prevention of attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Bab Al Mandab Strait.
Stéphanie Tremblay, Associate Spokesperson for the Secretary-General at the United Nations, expressed her hope that the agreement would positively contribute to freedom of maritime navigation in the region and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping in accordance with international law.
She affirmed the United Nations’ support for the Yemeni parties to reach a negotiated political settlement to end the conflict, exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions, calling on all parties to cooperate constructively with the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg.
Last week, Oman's mediation resulted in reaching a ceasefire agreement in Yemen with the United States. The mediation efforts undertaken by Oman led to a ceasefire agreement between the two sides; and exemplify Oman’s constructive and active role in supporting regional security and stability.
Oman reiterated the importance of de-escalation to safeguard regional security and stability, as well as to uphold the right of maritime navigation in accordance with international law.
