Muscat: Muscat Municipality has said that it is essential to obtain official permits before undertaking any planting or landscaping work outside the residential boundaries to maintain urban order and promote greenery within the regulatory framework.

According to the Municipality, residents who wish to beautify the areas surrounding their homes must first apply for a minor building permit allowing them to carry out such work.

In an online statement, the municipality said a prior approval is required before any planting is done along public roads or open areas adjacent to residential plots.

Violators who proceed without a permit will face an administrative fine of OMR 100. In addition, they will be required to either correct the violation or remove any unauthorised landscaping or installations, the municipality pointed out.

The Municipality has also issued clear guidelines to regulate such activities. Planting is restricted to the sides of the property facing roads or wadis, with specific distances that must be observed.

A minimum setback of 1.5 metres must be left as a walkway toward the street, and a space of at least 0.5 metres is required between the building’s outer wall and any planting works.

In the event the space between a residential property and the street exceeds 2 metres, only grass and seasonal flowers may be planted.

For properties with six metres of frontage or more, up to four metres may be used for planting, provided two metres remain clear.

The Municipality noted that planting works within integrated greenery projects also require prior coordination and approval from the supervising authorities.

The municipality said this step is part of broader efforts to enhance public spaces while ensuring pedestrian pathways are accessible.
