Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has announced the suspension of issuing new permits for private laboratories operating in the fields of food and water testing in the Governorates of Muscat and North al Batinah.

This came in a move to regulate the operation of private laboratories and enhance their efficiency.

The Ministry, represented by the Directorate General for Standards and Metrology and in coordination with other relevant government entities, said the decision aims to ensure the balanced distribution of laboratory services across the Sultanate of Oman.

In a statement, MoCIIP said that existing laboratories that are currently licensed will be allowed to continue performing the tests they are authorised for,

The Ministry also reiterated the importance of international accreditation for all private laboratories. It urged facilities to obtain certification in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, which outlines general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
