MUSCAT: Eid Al Fitr celebrations in the Sultanate of Oman have seen a remarkable transformation as a result of digitisation. Social media is now playing a major role in communicating between individuals thus impacting Eid traditions as we know them.

Many experts believe that social media has affected the role of Omani gatherings (traditionally known as sablas), which were once part and parcel of the Eid celebrations. WhatsApp messaging and other forms of digital communication have become the primary means of communication on special occasions replacing personal visits which may affect family relationships and verbal interactions.

On the other hand, experts point out that digitisation has not completely eliminated Omani traditions, but rather has helped document Eid features such as traditional costumes and dishes across social media platforms, contributing to the global dissemination of Omani culture. Conversely, some assert that the use of e-commerce has become more common during Eid, reducing the reliance on traditional markets.

Likewise, digital Eidiya has become popular among certain groups, but it is still less preferred than cash handouts. Ultimately, the challenge is to strike a balance between technological advancements and the social spirit of Eid.
