Oman’s capital, Muscat, has been hailed as an ‘incredible city’ and one of the ‘best destinations in the Middle East,’ according to Emily Wright, World News Reporter at the Daily Express.

“Muscat is a stunning city surrounded by mountains and desert, with an eclectic blend of modern shopping centres and historic fortresses,” Wright noted in her recent report.

She highlighted the city’s warm climate, adding, “At 30°C in March, it’s the perfect destination for those looking to escape the lingering winter chill.” Despite its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, Muscat remains one of the lesser-explored gems of the Arabian Peninsula.

“For those craving a city that boasts a blend of natural wonders, historic landmarks and modern charm, this incredible city in the Middle East ticks all the boxes,” Emily wrote. Tucked between the rugged Hajar Mountains and the Arabian Sea, Muscat has long been a gateway for Indian Ocean mariners, yet it has remained relatively under the radar for international tourists.

“The city is now opening its doors to visitors with a range of new resorts,” she observed, pointing to Oman’s efforts to position itself as a prime travel destination. Muscat, home to around 1.7 million people as of 2023, spans approximately 1,400 square miles, making it the largest city by area on the Arabian Peninsula.

With a history dating back to the 1st century CE, it has served as a vital port linking the East and the West. “It has a unique architectural blend influenced by Persian, Portuguese and Ottoman rule,” Emily explained.

Among the city’s must-see landmarks, she highlighted the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, ‘one of the most stunning mosques in the region,’ as well as the Ruwi Mosque and the historic Muttrah Souq.

Oman’s tourism sector is gearing up to rival its neighbours, with new luxury resorts set to open along its pristine coastline. “The Nikki Beach Resort and Spa in Yiti Bay — frequented by celebrities like Madonna and Jude Law — is set to open this year,” Emily revealed. She also mentioned the upcoming luxury Anantara Bandar Al Khairan Resort, scheduled for 2026, featuring beachfront villas. Muscat’s climate makes it an ideal winter escape, with temperatures in March averaging between 20°C and 30°C. By May and June, the mercury soars to around 40°C. “Now is the best time to visit,” Emily suggested.

With direct Oman Air flights from London Heathrow to Muscat International Airport taking just under eight hours, British travellers can reach the city for as little as £438 (about RO 206) return. Tourists who have visited Muscat are quick to praise its charm. “We were mesmerised by the city’s spotless streets and vibrant souqs,” one visitor shared on TripAdvisor. Another, who visited the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, called it ‘one of the most breathtaking mosques in the world.’ “As Oman continues to position itself as a key player in Middle Eastern tourism, Muscat is no longer a hidden gem - it’s a destination waiting to be explored,” she concludes in her report.
