The 12th edition of Fak Kurba, an initiative to release individuals involved in minor financial offenses, was launched under the auspices of Dr Hamad bin Hamdan al Rubaie, Chairman of the Board of the Omani Lawyers Association (OLA), on Tuesday.

This humanitarian initiative, organised by the OLA during the holy month of Ramadhan, aims to help individuals detained for small financial offenses secure their release. Both Omanis and expatriates will benefit from this initiative.

Dr Al Rubaei, speaking to the Observer, stated that over the past 11 editions, the initiative successfully secured the release of more than 7,113 individuals who met the eligibility criteria. "This year, the initiative aims to secure the release of approximately 1,300 individuals, with the participation of community members and various institutions from across the country," he added.

Al Rubaie emphasised that since its inception, the initiative has embodied the noble values and objectives upheld by Omani society. It reflects a remarkable story of cooperation and solidarity among individuals, civil institutions and official entities. "This has been evident in the statistics and achievements recorded throughout previous editions, as well as in assisting as many deserving individuals as possible."

Most of the people acquitted of minor and unintentional financial offenses in the past 12 years were those facing legal proceedings or detained for financial offenses. "In 2024 alone, we managed to secure the release of 1,219 people detained for financial offenses in various jails in Oman or facing legal proceedings in different courts in the country," said Dr Mohammed al Zadjali, head of OLA.

Payments ranging from a minimum of RO 100 to a maximum of RO 2,000 were made for the release of each individual, with the amount varying from person to person and from case to case.
