Listen to your instincts, use your intellect

Instinct versus intellect has been an intrigue of philosophers, psychologists and curious thinkers for centuries. While both play crucial roles in our decision-making processes — through understanding their dynamics, we can gain deeper insights into our intriguing human behaviour, and how we navigate through this fascinating world.

Instinct refers to the innate, subconscious responses that drive our actions. These are our gut feelings or intuitive impulses that arise unconsciously, often overriding our logical, conscious thoughts. Inborn, inherent and usually biologically driven, instincts are essential for our survival. They guide us through situations which demand immediate reactions, such as fleeing danger or nurturing loved ones. As instincts are deeply rooted in our evolutionary raising, they play a vital role in shaping human behaviours and actions.

Intellect, on the other hand, shapes our capacity for rational thoughts, critical analysis and problem-solving abilities, all of which allow us to decipher complex challenges and make informed decisions. Intellect distinguishes us from all other species and enables us to plan for the future, reflect on our past and innovate in our professional fields.

Instinct offers immediate reactions, more heartfelt and intuitively driven, while intellect provides us a framework for understanding the broader implications of our choices. This duality is evident in our everyday life. For instance, we may logically think through a scenario, however once we take action, the course can change, depending on the factors at play and situation at hand. Intellect devises strategies for winning, usually to be executed “by the book”, conversely instinct can change the course of the game.

The interplay between instinct and intellect is indeed captivating. Solely focusing on one without the other will not procure the results we would wish for, professionally nor personally. Striking a balance between the two is vital, as the dance between both allows us to reach a more cohesive outcome. Relying solely on intellect can sometimes delay action, while relying solely on instinct may lead to hasty decisions.

Unlevelling your emotional intelligence, incorporating mindfulness and listening to your body can limit the hasty overthinking mind, bringing about the confidence necessary to listen to your gut, while connecting with your head as well.

Unfortunately, societal perspectives still place higher value on intellect.

Education systems still favour analytical skills, memorising texts and standardising tests, potentially overshadowing the individuals connection to their instinctual wisdom. This can be problematic as children who have their instinct quashed too often, unfortunately learn that shutting off their emotional and intuitive responses is what is required to move through the world. Sadly, this will not serve them long-term.

Instinct allows for authentic connections and immediate responses while intellect offers clarity and foresight — two essential components of our human experience that enrich our lives in different and complementary ways.

By cultivating both, we can navigate life’s complexities with a more holistic approach, enabling better decision-making that considers our emotional and rational selves. Balancing these two influences will lead to a richer, more fulfilling life.
