

Oman has nearly 27 flash flood dams, in addition to check dams, to protect against flood risks in several wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman. The latest one, Wadi Al Jifnain Dam in the Wilayat of Al Seeb, will be opened on February 24, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR).
The dam, which will be inaugurated by His Highness Sayyid Harib bin Thuwaini al Said, Assistant Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers for Conferences, is 6.4 kilometres-long and 22 metres high.
The construction also included the protection of existing utility lines that crossed the dam's path. It features two bottom outlets and two overflow channels, according to the Ministry.
Another dam, Al Jufainah Dam, constructed in the Wilayat of Al Amerat, will be opened by Dr Mohammed bin Said al Maamari, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, on February 26 in Al Jufainah, Wilayat of Al Amerat.
The construction of the Wadi Jifnain Flood Protection Dam was awarded to STRABAG Oman and consists of an earth and rock fill with a 20-metre-deep concrete sealing wall.
It also includes an excavation in soil of 560,000 m³, 50,000 m3 of plastic concrete core, and 110,000 m3 of reinforced concrete classes C30 and C40. The reinforcement is 6,400 tons with 6 electrical gates and 60,000 m2 of diaphragm wall as a cut-off wall.
While Wadi Dayqa Dam in the Wilayat of Qurayat in the Muscat Governorate has a capacity of 100 million cubic metres, the Al Salif Dam in the Wilayat of Ibri has a capacity of one million cubic metres, and the Surur Dam in the Wilayat of Dhank has a capacity of 1.29 million cubic metres. The Sudairiyin Dam in the Wilayat of Yanqul has a capacity of 0.24 million cubic metres.
