MUSCAT: Oman, through the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will join the global celebration of World Tourist Guide Day on February 21, recognising the vital role of tour guides in enriching visitors' experiences with historical, cultural, and tourism insights.

Anwar bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Head of the Tourist Guidance Department at the ministry, emphasised that tour guides serve as ambassadors of Oman, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the country’s diverse heritage, nature, and culture.

By the end of 2024, Oman had issued 1,175 tour guide licences, with English being the most common language. The country also has licenced guides in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and other languages to cater to the growing diversity of international visitors.

To meet market demands, the ministry is working to expand the number of guides proficient in foreign languages and adventure tourism. Currently, Oman has 52 licensed adventure tour guides, including six Omani women specialising in the field.

Overall, 101 Omani women are licensed as tour guides, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to gender inclusion in the sector. The ministry continues to enhance training programmes and partnerships to empower tour guides and support the country’s growing tourism industry. — ONA
