A coastal odyssey

Have you heard of the mysterious Romantic Cave in Oman? Tucked away along the rugged coastline, it remains one of nature’s best-kept secrets — a cavern sculpted by time, where the interplay of light and shadow creates an otherworldly glow. To step inside is to feel an air of mystery, as if the cave itself is guarding tales of love and adventure.

For Erin Coyle, an English language instructor and travel writer who spent six years in Sur, the cave was just the beginning of a journey that would take her deep into Oman’s hidden marvels.

Along with her friend Sid, she set off on a week-long road trip from Tiwi to Salalah, eager to explore the untouched landscapes, coastal wonders, and unexpected surprises that awaited them. They started from the Romantic Cave and after taking pictures inside the cave, began their drive.

Nestled along the breathtaking coastline of Tiwi, Romantic Cave is a secluded natural wonder that captivates visitors with its raw beauty and tranquil charm. Framed by rock formations and overlooking the azure waters of the Arabian Sea, this hidden gem offers an idyllic escape for nature lovers, adventurers and photography enthusiasts.

From the sun-kissed shores of Al Ashkharah to the surreal pink lakes of Al Khaluf, their route was anything but ordinary. Sid’s determination to locate a long-forgotten shipwreck led them on a wild detour, only to discover that the ‘wreck’ was little more than a rusted, barely recognisable fragment, buried in soft sands. Laughter echoed across the dunes as they abandoned the fruitless search and pressed on.

Dawn in Al Ashkharah painted the sky in soft colours as fishermen pushed their boats into the sea, their nets glistening in the morning light. Further along, a wrong turn led them to expansive saltpans stretching endlessly across the horizon, shimmering under the midday sun. At Filim, a quiet fishing village in the Wilayat of Mahout, they were welcomed with warm smiles and an invitation to lunch — an act of kindness they had to decline to chase yet another sunset in Al Khaluf.

As they navigated the coastline, the journey grew more enchanting. At Humrat Cave, they ducked beneath a low entrance to discover a secluded beach covered in pink pebbles, where waves crashed against the rocks in a mesmerising dance. Further south, Ras Madrakah greeted them with soft sands and Omani hospitality as a local family gifted them a plate of traditional sweets.

Perhaps the most breathtaking find was Wadi Shuwaymiyah, a turquoise oasis hidden between towering cliffs. It was here they met Amira, an artisan whose hands had spent decades weaving Oman’s history into intricate handicrafts. In her shop, vibrant straw baskets and woven bassinets told stories of generations past.

With each scenic brown sign they passed, they made unplanned stops — stumbling upon ancient ruins in Minji reminiscent of Qalhat, wandering through mangroves teeming with birdlife, and soaking in the endless beauty of the ever-changing landscapes.

Finally, they reached Salalah, their intended destination. But as Erin reflected, the true magic was never about the journey’s end — it was in the winding roads, the spontaneous discoveries, and the people whose kindness left an imprint on their hearts.
