

MUSCAT: The Education and Research Committee of the State Council held a meeting under the chairmanship of Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Sarmi, Head of the Committee, on Tuesday.
The committee’s members discussed a proposed study titled ‘Enhancing the Quality of Academic Achievement and Mastering Competencies and Skills in School Education in the Sultanate of Oman.’ During its meeting, the committee hosted Dr Saleh al Busaidy, Dean of the College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) as well as some specialists from the college to discuss the topic.
The committee discussed the current policies and strategies followed by SQU in raising the quality of teacher preparation programmes, in addition to the mechanisms applied by the university for enhancing integration between teacher preparation and educational qualification programmes at the university. Also discussed at the meeting were the philosophy of education and teacher standards set by the Ministry of Education as well as the university’s evaluation outputs of teacher preparation programmes and their role in improving academic achievement in schools.
The SQU’s contributions to enhancing academic achievement were also reviewed, as well as the research studies the university conducted on strategies to raise the quality of academic output in school education with a focus on the legislative challenges that may hamper the improvement of teacher preparation programmes.
