Muscat: Oman's Public Prosecution in its annual media briefing on Tuesday revealed that the number of cases referred to it increased by 22.5 percent last year to 46,359, including 43,957 misdemeanors (minor cases), 2,281 felonies (serious crimes), and 121 cases of violations, administrative complaints, and incidents.

Violation of Labor law was among the five most common crimes last year with 12,407 cases, followed by bounced cheque crimes (9,699), foreign residency law violations (9,154), fraud crimes (5,343), and theft and extortion (4,002). 504 cases related to the employment of expatriates in Omani jobs, which raises the question of why some employers continue to violate the law despite the restrictions.

Cases related to violation of residency law increased from 6,000 to 9,000, and bounced checks increased from 8,000 to 9,000.

“Intensive campaigns to arrest violators in cooperation with security agencies contributed to the increase in the number of cases related to labor violations.”
