Public Prosecution sees a 22.5% jump in cases, Labour violations among top

Muscat: Oman's Public Prosecution in its annual media briefing on Tuesday revealed that the number of cases referred to it increased by 22.5 percent last year to 46,359, including 43,957 misdemeanors (minor cases), 2,281 felonies (serious crimes), and 121 cases of violations, administrative complaints, and incidents.


It added that 97.9 percent of the cases were completed either by referral, filing, or issuing a criminal order, and in 97.6 percent of cases, the court followed the actions of the


Public Prosecution, whether by convicting or upholding filing decisions.


The number of defendants in 2024 was 58,858, of whom 89.2 percent were males, 1.8 percent were juveniles, and 46.8 percent were foreigners, recording an increase of 23.5 percent over 2023.


Public Prosecution: 32,856 cases were received from the Royal Oman Police, followed by the Public Prosecution's e-services portal with 5,757 cases, then the Ministry of Labor with 4,142 cases.


Public Prosecution: 21,414 rulings were issued last year, an increase rate of 20.1 percent from 2023, of which 17,547 rulings were executed, and 13 percent is the percentage of increase in the number of rulings executed between 2023 and 2024.


Violation of Labor law was among the five most common crimes last year with 12,407 cases, followed by bounced cheque crimes (9,699), foreign residency law violations (9,154), fraud crimes (5,343), and theft and extortion (4,002). 504 cases related to the employment of expatriates in Omani jobs


The total number of cases related to public funds and money laundering last year was 192, including 33 serious crimes felonies, and 159 minor crimes, while the number of cheque bounces and frauds (related to money laundering) was 132.


RO10.9 million was confiscated in 2024.


173 cases of money laundering and smuggling in 2024, of which 75 of them were in Muscat Governorate, followed by North Al Batinah 40 cases.


69 crimes of employees exceeding the limits of negligence while performing their duties, of which 41 of them were in Muscat Governorate, followed by North Al Batinah and South Al Sharqiyah Governorates with 8 each.


21 cases of embezzlement and breach of trust with nine of them reported in in Muscat Governorate.


17 cases were related to the protection of public funds and assault on property.


There is a special team to monitor social media and detect all posts that could create disruption or division in society.


504 cases related to the employment of expatriates in Omani jobs.


Cases related to violation of residency law increased from 6,000 to 9,000, and bounced checks increased from 8,000 to 9,000.


Children abuse cases stood at 399 in 2024, which included harassment and indecent behaviors, followed by 366 cases of practicing any form of violence against children and 174 cases of exposing children to delinquency.
