MUSCAT: Artisanal fishing in Oman produced 477,312 tonnes of fish by the end of September 2024, marking an 11.6% increase from 427,589 tonnes during the same period in 2023. The total value of fish landed across artisanal, commercial, and coastal fishing reached RO 348 million, according to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information.


Al Wusta Governorate led with 164,816 tonnes of artisanal landings, followed by South Al Sharqiyah with 137,971 tonnes, and North and South Al Batinah with a combined 61,532 tonnes. Dhofar contributed 49,249 tonnes, Musandam 37,061 tonnes, and Muscat 26,683 tonnes.


Small surface fish dominated artisanal fishing with 237,614 tonnes, followed by large surface fish (134,337 tonnes) and demersal fish (85,475 tonnes). Sharks accounted for 7,673 tonnes, crustaceans and molluscs 7,849 tonnes, and other fish 4,364 tonnes. — ONA
