MUSCAT, JAN 25: Oman is making remarkable strides in its commitment to environmental sustainability through the promotion of green buildings, a cornerstone of its efforts to achieve the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

The National Green Building Rating System, ‘Roznah,’ spearheaded by the Environment Authority in collaboration with governmental and private institutions, is at the forefront of this movement. This system aims to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly construction practices, reduce energy consumption, conserve natural resources, and enhance the quality of life for residents while fostering innovation and environmental awareness.

Green buildings integrate energy-efficient systems, renewable materials and environmentally conscious construction techniques.

By embracing these standards, Oman seeks to reduce carbon emissions, lower reliance on fossil fuels and elevate its global standing in environmental performance, as evidenced by its leap to the 54th position in the international environmental performance index in 2024, up from 149th in 2022.

Shafa bint Mohammed al Amriyah, Acting Head of the Environmental Planning Department, highlighted the phased implementation of the green building assessment framework. In the next stage, a comprehensive guide will be developed to detail evaluation mechanisms, based on seven key criteria. Initially, the standards will be applied to government buildings and sustainable cities, with a gradual rollout to include commercial properties, factories and residential units.

"The application of green building standards is expected to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability by conserving resources, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions," said Shafa. "It will also stimulate investments in green technologies and open opportunities for small and medium enterprises in this emerging sector."

Key features of Oman’s green buildings include the optimal use of water and renewable energy, the incorporation of natural and recycled materials, and the minimisation of industrial materials that harm human health and environmental purity. These efforts not only enhance air and water quality but also protect biodiversity, reduce construction waste and promote the use of sustainable energy sources.

The National Green Building Rating System is poised to deliver significant economic and social returns, including reduced operational costs for building owners and improved living conditions for occupants. With its focus on environmental stewardship, Oman is setting a benchmark for sustainable urban development, aligning with the Sustainable Development Plan 2030 and reinforcing its dedication to achieving the strategic goals of Oman Vision 2040.
