MUSCAT, JAN 25
In a landmark move for Oman’s leisure sector, the first agreement to integrate solar energy into a recreational facility has been signed. This initiative, led by Green Universe Enterprise, an Omani SME, in partnership with Ghala Golf Club, aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. The project aligns with Oman Vision 2040, underscoring the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental responsibility.
In an exclusive interview with Oman Observer, Sumaya al Rawahi, CEO of Green Universe Enterprise, highlighted the importance of the partnership. “Athletic spaces like Ghala Golf Club are perfect examples of environments that reflect harmony with nature. However, we believe this connection should go beyond aesthetics—it should translate into meaningful action by embedding sustainability into their operations,” Al Rawahi explained.
She praised the foresight of the club’s leadership, which shares the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and renewable energy transformation.
The solar energy project has a total capacity of 313 kilowatts, designed to cover 30–40% of the club’s energy needs while providing long-term cost savings and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The project features two key installations: a 131-kilowatt solar car park system generating 234,500 kilowatt-hours annually and a 181-kilowatt shed area system producing 330,400 kilowatt-hours per year. These systems not only generate clean energy but also provide functional enhancements such as shaded parking and comfortable workspaces for staff.
Discussing the innovative approach taken, Al Rawahi emphasised the creative solutions developed for the project. “With Ghala Golf Club, the traditional rooftop wasn’t feasible for solar panel installation, so we devised a creative two-in-one solution.
The car park solar system generates clean energy while enhancing the visitor experience with shaded parking, and the shed area provides shaded workspace for golf carts and equipment,” she said. The project’s design ensures that the installations blend seamlessly with the club’s aesthetic and operational needs, demonstrating how sustainability can be integrated without disrupting functionality or beauty.
Ziyad al Zubair, Vice-Chairman of Ghala Golf Club, stressed the club’s commitment to sustainability and its role as a trailblazer in the leisure sector. “This project is a reflection of our responsibility to reduce the club’s carbon footprint while demonstrating that modern luxury and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously. We hope to inspire other organisations in Oman to adopt similar sustainable practices,” Al Zubair said.
The initiative is expected to eliminate approximately 10,778 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the solar system’s lifespan, equivalent to planting around 17,000 trees annually. Al Zubair added that the project fosters a sense of pride among the club’s members and visitors, encouraging them to be part of an eco-friendly movement.
“By showcasing this solar-powered initiative, we are making a broader statement about the future of sustainable sports and leisure facilities in Oman,” he noted.
Al Rawahi further elaborated on the long-term benefits of the project. “This initiative is about more than just numbers—it’s about redefining how athletic spaces operate sustainably while preserving their beauty and purpose. Ghala Golf Club is pioneering a movement we hope will inspire other sports and leisure facilities across Oman to embrace renewable energy,” she said.
The partnership also aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s sustainability goals, serving as an example of how private and public organisations can collaborate to support national objectives. By generating clean energy onsite, Ghala Golf Club reduces its reliance on grid electricity, cuts operational costs, and contributes to the fight against climate change.
Looking ahead, the club has plans to expand solar energy use to other facilities, such as the clubhouse and maintenance areas, further enhancing its environmental impact. Al Zubair reiterated the broader vision: “We are proud to take this step and remain committed to making sustainability a cornerstone of our operations. This project is just the beginning of a larger journey toward a greener future.”
