

MUSCAT: Oman’s telecommunications sector witnessed robust investment activity in 2023, with total investments reaching approximately RO 221.9 million. These investments were allocated across various segments, with 37 per cent directed towards fixed telecommunications services, 53.7 per cent towards mobile services, and 9.3 per cent towards other ancillary services.
According to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) annual report, the Authority issued 12 public consultation documents in 2023, aiming to engage stakeholders and ensure a regulatory environment that adapts to rapid technological advancements.
Significant strides were made in expanding broadband access across Oman, with the number of fifth-generation (5G) stations increasing to 5,238. Additionally, fibre optic networks now cover 773,589 residential units, marking substantial progress in digital connectivity.
The report also detailed that by the end of 2023, 377 valid communications permits were issued, covering a broad range of services. These included 41 licences for tracking and geolocation services, six for Internet of Things (IoT) services, and 267 for implementing communications-related services. Furthermore, 48 licenses were granted for establishing or operating private networks, five for utilising inactive infrastructure, three in the regulatory sandbox for new communications services, and two for voice or video communications via Internet Protocol (IP).
The postal services sector also saw significant growth, with 15 new companies licenced in 2023, bringing the total to 63 licensed companies. This expansion has led to the creation of 1,624 new jobs, with Omani nationals filling 1,223 of these positions, reflecting the sector's role in driving local employment opportunities. — ONA
