Muscat: The Ministry of Labour on Thursday announced that the Council of Ministers has approved a package of exemptions and financial settlements worth more than RO 60 million as part of ongoing efforts to secure the rights of individuals and business owners.

MoL has cancelled all fines and dues of individuals whose labour cards expired 7 years ago. In addition, individuals and business owners will be absolved of paying the registered dues (and this includes the cost of workers’ deportation tickets) for 2017 and before, a statement said.

The ministry said it cancelled labour cards that were inactive for 10 years during which the card holders did not apply for any associated service. But the cards could be reactivated in case of renewal application, a worker’s departure, transfer of services and the registration of a report of absconding workers.

The ministry has also written off dues of liquidated companies, provided that the workers of such companies are deported or their services be transferred to other parties.

In addition, the ministry also announced a grace period (six months starting from February 1) for the parties concerned to help them to streamline the conditions of workers and employers and exempt them from fines associated with the labour cards, provided that the licence is renewed, the renewal money is paid for the next two years, the report of leaving work is cancelled, the workers are transferred and the air ticket is paid by the employer during a worker’s final exit from the country.

The Ministry of Labour said that it will begin receiving applications related to this matter from February 1 until July 31, through its website and various service delivery outlets. — ONA
