MUSCAT, JAN 19
The Ministry of Labour has introduced updated regulations 13/2025, relaxing conditions for students to take part-time jobs in Oman. These changes aim to provide students with valuable work experience while safeguarding their academic pursuits and rights.
Part-time work is employment with fewer working hours than the standard hours prescribed by law or practiced within the same establishment.
Some of the key highlights of the new decision include:
Employment is restricted to Omani nationals.
Working hours must not be less than four hours a day and cannot exceed 25 hours per week.
Eligible individuals include students, job seekers, retirees and current employees.
The hourly wage for part-time jobs must not be less than RO 3, though employers and employees may negotiate a different rate. Employers must adhere to several responsibilities, including: Defining job roles and providing necessary training.
Ensuring occupational health and safety measures are in place, paying wages as per Article 90 of the Labour Law and registering workers in the Social Security Fund and contributing to it.
The specific guidelines for students include that students must meet the following criteria to qualify for part-time employment:
Be at least 15 years old and enrolled in a public or private school and obtain their guardian’s consent via a Ministry-approved form.
Maintain enrollment in educational institutions without compromising any financial allocations received.
A written part-time employment contract must outline the hours, wage, working days, and payment methods. Notably, these updates replace previous restrictions under Ministerial Resolution 115/2021, which limited student employment to vacations and specific professions.
The additional provisions include the employers must submit a copy of the contract to the Ministry.
Either party may terminate the contract with at least three business days' written notice and students will receive a certificate of experience for their part-time work.
This decision underscores Oman’s commitment to fostering a work culture that complements education and promotes skill development among students.
