Muscat: The Ministry of Labor issued a decision (13/2025) related to the employment of minors and the jobs and professions in which they may be employed.

Part-time work means work in which the hours are less than the working hours set for workers in the same establishment or the working hours set by law.

The employer may employ the worker for a short period by the following conditions, which include that the employment shall be limited to Omanis, the number of working hours per day shall not be less than four hours, and in all cases shall not exceed 25 hours per week.

The part-time worker must be an employee, job seeker, student, or retiree. The worker may be employed for a part-time period by the provisions of the Labor Law and the Juvenile Employment System and the jobs and professions in which they may be employed. |

The hourly wage shall not be less than RO3, and it is permissible to agree on less than that. The employer shall, when employing a part-time worker, undertake the following:

Determine the work tasks and train the worker for some time to perform them.

Provide occupational health and safety requirements.

Pay wages under the provisions of Article 90 of the Labor Law.

Register the worker for some time in the Social Security Fund and pay the required contributions.

The following conditions apply to employing students for a part-time period:

The student must be enrolled in a public or private school, provided that:

He or she must not be less than 15 years old.

Approval of the student’s guardian, according to the form prepared by the Ministry for this purpose.

The student must be registered in one of these institutions, and the student’s part-time work does not result in him being deprived of the financial allocations allocated to him by the institution.

In all cases, the student’s part-time employment does not require the approval of the school or higher education institution in which he is enrolled, and the student is granted a certificate of experience for the period of work he spent with the employer.

The part-time employment contract must be in writing and should determine the number of working hours, working days, hourly wage, and method of payment.

As per the earlier ministerial decision 115/2021, the student's employment must be limited to the days of the mid-year and end-of-year vacations, and the student's employment was limited to 73 professions stipulated in Ministerial Resolution 217/2016.

The employer is obligated to provide the competent administrative division in the Ministry with the worker’s contract for some time upon conclusion.

The employer or the worker may, for some time, terminate the contract after notifying the other party in writing at least three business days before the termination date.
