IBRI: Al Dhahirah Governorate is strengthening its agricultural sector through 22 investment projects focused on strategic crops such as wheat, onions, and others. These initiatives, covering 3,000 acres and valued at RO 7.5 million, aim to bolster food security and reduce imports.

Engineer Salem bin Ali al Amrani, Director General of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah, revealed that onion cultivation is a priority, with two projects spanning 1,600 acres. The first phase, in Dhank Wilayat, involves a 50-acre project funded by the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund in partnership with Dhank Agricultural Production and Marketing Company. This project is expected to yield 700 tonnes of red onions annually, significantly meeting local demand.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is providing technical and financial support, employing modern farming techniques to ensure efficiency and sustainability. Al Amrani emphasised that these projects represent a strategic step toward enhancing private-sector participation in agricultural development.

In addition to ongoing projects, the Directorate is preparing 30 new investment opportunities in agricultural, animal, and water resources, underscoring the region’s commitment to agricultural innovation and self-sufficiency.

These initiatives aim to reduce reliance on imports, raise local production levels, and create opportunities for private investment, further contributing to Oman’s food security and economic diversification goals. — ONA
