SALALAH: In a groundbreaking achievement, a team of ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgeons from Al Nahda Hospital, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, has successfully performed cochlear implant surgeries on four patients suffering from severe hearing loss.

This medical milestone marks the first time such surgeries have been conducted outside Muscat Governorate, bringing hope to patients in Dhofar Governorate. The procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who cannot rely on traditional hearing aids due to the severity of their condition.

Cochlear implants involve the use of an advanced electronic device implanted under the skin. The device directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling patients to perceive sound and regain a significant portion of their hearing ability. This technology offers an effective and life-enhancing solution for those with inner ear damage, paving the way for an improved quality of life.

The surgeries were made possible through state-of-the-art tools and technologies provided by Cochlear, an Australian company specialising in hearing aid innovation. Their contribution underscores the importance of global collaboration in advancing medical care.

This initiative highlights the growing accessibility of specialised medical services in Dhofar, setting a precedent for expanding advanced healthcare across Oman. — ONA
