Muscat: The Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science (ONCECS) recently convened its first General Assembly meeting, chaired by Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education (MoE) and Chairperson of the Commission. The meeting aimed to familiarise members with the objectives and activities of Unesco, ISESCO and ALECSO while exploring ways to align these efforts with Oman Vision 2040.
The session was attended by prominent figures, including Her Highness Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at SQU, Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education and Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr Mahmoud al Abri, Secretary of the Commission, and members from national institutions related to education, culture and science.
The meeting discussed key objectives and it focused on understanding the needs of national institutions for activities provided by international organisations; enhancing Oman's representation in global conferences related to education, culture and science; and highlighted Oman's achievements in these fields to international audiences.
In her opening address, Dr Madeeha emphasised the Commission's role as a vital link between Oman and international organisations, fostering partnerships to implement programmes that advance sustainable development and national priorities.
Dr Mahmoud al Abri highlighted the Commission's accomplishments, that include, registering five tangible cultural heritage sites and 15 cultural elements; hosting international conferences such as the ISESCO Ministers of Education meeting; promoting initiatives like digital learning, curriculum alignment with the labour market and developing future skills.
Badr al Harthy, Assistant Secretary of the Commission, shed light on efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) through initiatives that ensure inclusive and equitable education.
As part of its strategic vision the ONCECS aims to align its initiatives with Oman Vision 2040 and the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
It aspires to build national and international partnerships to enhance development effort; and empower national institutions and individuals through capacity-building programmes.
Presentations by sector directors showcased ongoing and completed programmes, reflecting the Commission's commitment to fostering education, culture and science at both national and international levels.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of ONCECS's dedication to advancing Oman's cultural and scientific standing globally.
