

MUSCAT: Oman marked a significant milestone in scientific advancement with the First Scientific Forum for Electronic Resources, held under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
The forum was organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), represented by the Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN), in collaboration with Clarivate, a global leader in data and analytics for scientific innovation.
The forum served as a road map to bolster scientific research strategies in Oman, enhance the quality of scientific publications, and align with cutting-edge global trends. The event witnessed the participation of university presidents, college deans, and representatives from various academic and research institutions across the Sultanate of Oman.
A central objective of the forum was to evaluate Oman's scientific research positioning against global benchmarks and to leverage international best practices.
Key topics included analysing national research performance indicators, improving these metrics, and emphasising the importance of advanced research tools like the Web of Science database for strategic planning and performance analysis.
Highlights of the forum included four working papers addressing critical themes like the the role of high-quality research data, the vision for scientific research as a pathway to innovation.
The other papers included current performance and emerging trends in Omani research and AI-supported research strategies for future development.
A notable focus was the integration of artificial intelligence, showcasing its ability to analyse research data with precision, foster innovative solutions and craft advanced strategies. Discussions underscored AI's potential to elevate Oman’s global scientific standing.
Recommendations from the forum emphasised the need for increased collaboration among academic and research institutions, enhanced investments in research infrastructure, and encouragement for publishing in high-impact journals. Strengthening international partnerships was also highlighted as a vital step to improve Oman's research ranking and academic reputation.
This inaugural forum aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040, serving as a pivotal platform to foster knowledge exchange and strategic dialogue among researchers and decision-makers. It is a testament to Oman’s commitment to positioning itself as a leader in scientific research and innovation.
