MUSCAT: As the weather transitions to winter in Muscat, an increase in viral infections has been observed, leaving many residents feeling under the weather. What often starts as a sore throat can linger, affecting daily routines, including students missing classes.

This raises the question: should we revive the habit of wearing masks, especially in crowded spaces or when experiencing symptoms? Dr Mujeeb A M, Specialist in Cardiology, advises, "While attending public gatherings, it’s a good idea to wear a mask. If you're feeling symptoms, include Vitamin C-rich foods in your diet."

However, the willingness to wear masks has diminished. One respondent remarked, "I’ll wear a mask if the authorities mandate it," signalling a departure from the earlier etiquette of mask usage to protect others when symptomatic.

Healthcare providers are noting a significant surge in viral fever cases. Dr Dilip Singhvi, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Head of Infectious Diseases at Burjeel Hospital, highlighted a rise in respiratory illnesses ranging from mild to severe. Patients report symptoms such as fever, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, dry cough, and, in some cases, gastrointestinal distress like nausea.

Dr Singhvi recommends staying hydrated, practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding crowded spaces to minimise exposure. He advises those with severe symptoms, such as persistent high fever or difficulty breathing, to seek immediate medical attention.

During winter, respiratory diseases like the common cold (influenza) often affect the upper respiratory tract (pharynx, larynx and vocal cords) and may progress to lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Factors like exposure to cold air, molds, pollution, and smog exacerbate asthma and chronic lung diseases (COPD).

Tips to stay healthy this winter:

Dress warmly: Wear layers to protect against cold air.

Cover up: Use scarves or masks to shield your mouth and nose from direct cold air.

Vaccinate: Take the influenza vaccine annually before winter.

Adhere to medications: Do not skip regular medication for asthma or chronic lung conditions.

Act early: Seek medical advice promptly for concerning symptoms.

With awareness and timely precautions, it’s possible to navigate the flu season while staying healthy and safe.
