MUSCAT: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will host the Security Week, and ministerial meeting, which will be held for the first time after the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) headquarters in
in Montreal, Canada.
To be held between December 9 and 12 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC), the Week will focus on the role of global civil aviation security amidst the increasing growth of air transport worldwide, especially following the gradual recovery of the sector post-COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring commitment to ongoing cooperation with other ICAO member states to overcome future challenges in the sector.
It will address critical issues affecting global aviation security and recommend initiatives to tackle challenges facing international aviation security, emphasizing the importance of a collective approach among member states to address joint efforts related to comprehensive counter-terrorism issues, including the protection of critical civil aviation infrastructure.
The main objective of the ICAO members is to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members and strengthen international cooperation, coordination, and communication to ensure the security of civil
aviation, coordinate responses to emerging threats and solutions, explore ways to cooperate in facing these challenges, and discuss and share best practices in aviation security and facilitation
The high-level ministerial segment will take place on December 11 to identify global priorities ahead of the 42nd ICAO Assembly in September 2025.
The ministerial segment will serve as a platform for strategic discussions and the endorsement of a ministerial declaration on aviation security. This includes aviation security, cybersecurity, and protection of
vital aviation infrastructure, as well as launching the second edition of the Global Aviation Security Plan.
It may be noted that Oman is making significant strides to boost its aviation sector, focusing on competitiveness, investment opportunities, and sustainability. Key initiatives include digital transformation, infrastructure upgrades, and strategic planning to position Oman as a regional aviation hub. Recent developments include the inauguration of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport, increasing capacity to handle larger aircraft like the Airbus A380.
