MUSCAT: Under the auspices of Sultan bin Salim al Habsi, Minister of Finance (MoF), the eighth edition of the “ICAO Security Week 2024 and High-Level Ministerial Meeting” commenced at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by the Sultanate of Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the four-day event runs from December 9 to 12, 2024, bringing together over 600 officials, ministers and civil aviation experts from across the globe.
The conference, held for the first time outside ICAO’s headquarters in Montreal, focuses on strengthening global aviation security. Key discussions include combating terrorism, protecting critical aviation infrastructure and enhancing passenger safety. Participants will share best practices and explore strategies for addressing emerging security challenges such as cyber threats.
In his opening remarks, Eng Nayef bin Ali al Abri, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), expressed pride in Oman’s role as the first country to host this global event outside ICAO’s base. He praised Oman’s international recognition for its contributions to global aviation security.
“This event embodies our firm commitment to developing the aviation industry and enhancing safety standards. It serves as a platform for aviation and security experts worldwide to exchange ideas and discuss innovations in this vital sector,” Al Abri stated.
He highlighted Oman’s advancements in aviation security, citing robust infrastructure, skilled local talent and regulatory frameworks aligned with global standards. “Oman has become a regional and international leader in aviation security, ensuring the safety of passengers and stability of international airspace,” he added.
Al Abri also announced a high-level ministerial dialogue aimed at defining the global aviation security road map through the “High-Level Ministerial Declaration on Aviation Security and Cybersecurity.”
Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of ICAO’s Council, commended Oman’s leadership in hosting the event and its commitment to aviation security. He noted that this year’s conference includes a ministerial segment for the first time, underscoring international cooperation in securing air travel.
Sciacchitano also unveiled the second edition of the Global Aviation Security Plan, which will guide Member States in tackling evolving threats such as cyberattacks and complex air network operations.
