MUSCAT: Oman's journey of comprehensive development showcases the vision of its wise leadership and the aspirations of the Omani people for a prosperous future. Over the past five years, the Sultanate of Oman has undergone significant transformation across diverse fields, including education, healthcare, economy and infrastructure, with a focus on building a sustainable and thriving society. Central to this vision are modern road projects that strengthen connectivity across cities and governorates, enhancing the transportation network to support economic and social progress.
Key initiatives like the dual carriageway from Ibri to Al Batha, the development of Al Rusayl Road, and the first phase of the Batinah Coastal Road reflect Oman’s commitment to advanced infrastructure that caters to citizens and residents and drives economic growth.
Dual Carriageway from Ibri to Al Batha: Enhancing Regional Connectivity
The dual carriageway from Ibri to Al Batha is a landmark project enhancing the land connection between Oman and Saudi Arabia. Stretching across the Empty Quarter Desert, this 725-kilometre route begins at Ibri roundabout in Al Dhahirah Governorate and ends at Al Batha Junction in Saudi Arabia. The Omani segment covers 161 kilometres, while the Saudi portion spans 564 kilometres. Since its inauguration in December 2021, this vital road has been a key artery for trade and tourism, facilitating the movement of goods and travellers and significantly reducing travel time and distance, thus enhancing Oman’s competitive edge in the region.
This collaborative project adheres to global safety and mobility standards, with added rest stops and services for travellers. The road strengthens economic and trade ties with Gulf countries and supports Oman’s goals of sustainability and inclusive development.
Al Rusayl Road: A Major Economic Artery
Al Rusayl Road, a critical part of Oman’s road network, connects Muscat to key industrial and commercial zones like the Al Rusayl Industrial Zone. Extensive upgrades have reduced congestion and improved traffic flow, addressing the demands of increasing transportation activity. Given the presence of major industrial areas along this route, its development boosts the industrial and commercial sectors, streamlines logistics, and improves services for investors and industrialists.
These improvements, which include bridge additions, intersections and lane expansions, align with Oman’s vision for enhanced quality of life and smoother mobility. The upgraded road reduces travel time, bolsters safety and supports Oman's economic aspirations.
Batinah Coastal Road Project: Boosting Logistics and Coastal Access
In another significant infrastructure milestone, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology signed a RO 79-million contract in April 2024 to complete the first phase of the Batinah Coastal Road. This phase includes paving remaining segments, dualising links between Barka and Al Suwaiq, and constructing an alternative bridge for Al Suwaiq roundabout. The project is expected to stimulate commercial and industrial activities by improving connections between logistics hubs at Barka, Al Suwaiq ports and Khazaen Economic City. Enhancing connectivity along coastal areas will also support tourism by providing better access to popular coastal destinations.
Paving the Way for Economic Expansion and Sustainable Development
These road projects form part of Oman’s national strategy to enhance its transportation network and improve logistical service efficiency. Facilitating trade and transportation within Oman and to regional borders, they open new opportunities for economic cooperation and investment. Additionally, they create jobs, bolster economic stability and reinforce Oman’s role as a regional logistics hub.
Under the guidance of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, these infrastructure projects embody Oman Vision 2040, setting a foundation for sustainable prosperity. By prioritising high standards of safety and quality, these developments promise long-term benefits, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
