The relationship between Oman and Algeria has deep historical roots, dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973. This year marked a significant milestone when the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos visited Algeria, laying the groundwork for a partnership characterised by mutual respect and shared values. The subsequent visit by Algerian President Chadli Benjedid to Oman in 1990 further solidified these ties.

Both nations are committed to maintaining strong political relations, not only bilaterally but also multilaterally through organisations such as the League of Arab States and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Their shared principles include non-intervention in internal affairs, dialogue as a means to resolve conflicts, and a steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause.

This alignment on various regional and international issues has fostered a proactive approach towards common interests.

Oman and Algeria reiterated their condemnation of Israel’s aggression towards and occupation of Palestine, which they agreed amounts to war crimes and genocide. They rejected any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Both countries affirmed the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent, sovereign state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The economic relationship between Oman and Algeria is marked by robust cooperation across multiple sectors including energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

The formation of a joint committee in 1991 has been pivotal in enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

As of July 2024, trade exchange reached approximately RO 41 million, with Oman exporting goods worth RO 37 million to Algeria.

Looking ahead, there are promising avenues for further collaboration. The state visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is expected to enhance discussions on investment opportunities in energy and mining sectors. Both nations aim to explore advancements in pharmaceutical industries where Algeria has made significant strides recently.

The visit aims to motivate both countries to exploit the available opportunities to implement joint investment projects. These include energy, industry, mining, desert agriculture, and renewable energy.

In agriculture, desert farming initiatives in Algeria present another area ripe for cooperation. With plans to cultivate millions of hectares for agricultural purposes, this sector offers potential benefits for both countries as they seek sustainable development solutions.

This is evident when His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik met the Algerian President. Both leaders agreed to enhance further cooperation.

The longstanding, brotherly partnership between Algeria and Oman is characterised by mutual respect, shared values and a proactive approach to issues of common interest and concern. It has flourished in recent years.

Numerous agreements and memoranda of understanding have been signed in various fields over the years on issues including trade, investment and education scholarships and shared expertise in the hydrocarbons industry.

Algeria, being one of the world's leading producers of phosphate, an essential ingredient in fertilisers, has potential for increased trade with Oman’s growing agriculture sector.

Also, since Oman is looking to boost its fisheries sector, especially its exports, there are hopes of expanding its market in North Africa, and to this effect Algeria can be one of the big markets for Oman’s fish.

Both governments are keen to strengthen ties in logistics and shipping to make trade routes more efficient. This includes discussions on improved sea links and air cargo routes between ports in Algeria and Oman to allow faster and more direct trade exchanges.

The relationship between Oman and Algeria is characterised by a long-standing partnership built on mutual respect and shared objectives. Both countries have demonstrated their commitment to enhancing cooperation across various fields while addressing regional challenges collectively.

As they continue to strengthen their ties through diplomatic visits and joint ventures, the future looks promising for both nations.
