MUSCAT: Muscat will host the 12th Regional Cybersecurity Week starting on Monday, a premier event organized by the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Regional Cybersecurity Center and hosted by Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. Set to draw 600 participants, including decision-makers and experts from more than 60 countries, the event will delve into the latest advancements in cybersecurity, lasting for four days at the Grand Millennium Hotel.

This year’s theme, “Cybersecurity Enhances Economic Growth,” reflects the increasingly strategic role of cybersecurity in fostering a robust digital economy. The agenda includes the 12th Regional Cybersecurity Conference, the FIRST Symposium for Arab and African Countries, the 16th Annual Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Cybersecurity Centers, and a hands-on cybersecurity exercise involving nations from the Arab region, OIC member states, Asia-Pacific, and Africa.

Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry, stressed that Oman plays a pivotal role in enhancing cybersecurity on both regional and global stages. According to Al Shidhani, the Ministry has initiated an executive program to support innovation in the cybersecurity industry, viewing it as an essential pillar of the digital economy. The Ministry’s efforts, he explained, are further evidenced by Oman’s leadership of the Regional Cybersecurity Center and its commitment to nurturing cybersecurity capabilities.

In addition to panel discussions and workshops, the Cybersecurity Week will also unveil new initiatives aimed at bolstering regional cybersecurity infrastructure and enhancing cooperation across sectors. Al Shidhani emphasized the importance of fostering innovation in cybersecurity, particularly as the sector continues to evolve to meet new challenges. This year’s event will also recognize achievements in cybersecurity through national, regional, and international awards, underscoring Oman’s commitment to setting high standards in the field. — ONA
