France now hosts the first museum dedicated to Sufi art and culture.

The institution, which opened in Chatou near Paris on Saturday, showcases works and objects influenced by Sufism, the ascetic and spiritual trend within Islam.

It is also said to be the only one of its kind worldwide, the museum's management said.

The Museum of Sufi Art and Culture MTO (MACS MTO) is housed in a19th-century city palace.

In addition to its permanent collection of 19th-century objects, including manuscripts and prayer rugs, it features works by contemporary artists influenced by mysticism.

Among these are works by the French-American artist Seffa Klein and the South African Bianca Bondi. —dpa
