Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced that the Directorate General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigations has issued a warning to citizens and residents regarding fraudulent text messages circulating about traffic violations in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
The fraudulent messages prompt recipients to provide personal and banking information under the pretense of settling traffic fines.
ROP advised everyone not to respond to unknown messages and to avoid disclosing personal and banking data.
It may be noted that as per a unified system, motorists can pay traffic fines acquired in the GCC through the ROP application.
To contest the fine, the motorists can go to the ROP traffic department and lodge a complaint or go to the GCC country where the fine has been registered.
According to the ROP sources, fines of any kind should be paid only through the ROP website and application to avoid being a victim of online fraud.
Last week, Bank Muscat, warned customers to beware of false courier alerts often received as emails or SMS.
In its warning, the bank said that fake courier notifications can trick one into sharing personal information or making payments.
The messages read as Postal Notice. You have a pending package that could not be delivered due to an incorrect address.
