Sur: The 2024 shrimp fishing season began in the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, Dhofar and Al Wusta and will last for three months until the end of November.
Salem bin Sultan al Araimi, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, said that the total output of the Sultanate of Oman from artisanal shrimp fishing amounted to 2,761 tonnes in 2023 including 2,024 tonness from Al Wusta Governorate, 717 tonnes from South Al Sharqiyah Governorate while exports amounted to 2,680 tonnes worth RO 6.6 million.
In the 2022 season, the total production of shrimp in the Sultanate of Oman amounted to 1,721 tonnes with Al Wusta Governorate accounting for 1,319 tonnes, followed by South Al Sharqiyah Governorate at 402 tonnes.
Al Araimi pointed out that the shrimp output from artisanal fishing in 2023 generated good returns for fishermen and other parties involved in the fisheries sector, noting that a kilogramme of shrimp is priced between RO 2 and RO 4 depending on the supply and demand factors.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources addressed its specialists to urge fishermen to abide by the regulations and laws to sustain shrimp wealth including avoiding the use of banned fishing nets and dredging methods to ensure the sustainability of this important economic resource, Al Araimi said. — ONA
