MUSCAT: A medical team at the Royal Hospital conducted a complex surgical operation to treat "median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS)" using a surgical endoscope. The team met with success in addressing such a rare condition that often poses major challenges, both in diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Mohammed bin Said al Abri, Consultant of Obesity and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Royal Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA), that the patient was suffering from severe, recurring abdominal pain that seriously affected the quality of his daily life. He said that the medical team carried out a number of examinations using advanced diagnostic tools and CT scans, based on the medical history of the patient, and eventually managed to accurately diagnosing the case as MALS.

Dr Al Abri pointed out that the operation was performed using a surgical endoscope that helped keep the abdominal artery free from the usual pressure and risks involved in conventional open surgery operations.

“After the operation, the medical team noticed immediate improvement in the patient's condition: The abdominal pain disappeared and the patient was able to eat normally without feeling nausea or pain,” Dr Al Abri observed. — ONA
