MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning, and the School of Intellectual Education, celebrated the Down Syndrome International Day, which this year comes under the slogan 'Ending the Stereotype.'

The day was marked under the patronage of artist Alia Al Farsi, and in the presence of Dr Thuraiya Al Rashidi, Director-General, Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning. The celebration took place at the School of Intellectual Education.

The ceremony coincides with the celebration of the Down Syndrome International Day, which falls on March 21st every year in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 149/66 of December 2011, which states 'to proclaim March 21 as International Down Syndrome Day, to be observed annually beginning in 2012,' to raise awareness of Down syndrome.

The ceremony included the inauguration of the logo of the School of Intellectual Education, which includes symbolic connotations of the mentally disabled students who need care until they gradually acquire skills with their own care.

During the ceremony, the winning videos were played in a competition to produce a video carrying a message for people with Down Syndrome, which was announced by the School of Intellectual Education. Later, artist Alia Al Farsi, honoured the competition winners.

The celebration was accompanied by an exhibition aimed at highlighting the artistic works of students with Down Syndrome, and the presentation of the Banan Student Company, which is concerned with printing students’ drawings on fabric, in addition to the presentation of the 'With Us, Your Lesson is More Enjoyable' initiative.

This is an initiative targeting students with mental disabilities, based on the principles of designing interactive electronic content, that begins with the analysis phase and ends with the production of interactive lessons in which the student is the focus of the learning process.
