‘As-salaam alaykum’, the reservation desk warmly greets me as I enter Kumarakom Lake Resort (KLR), a sanctuary where tradition and luxury converge on the tranquil banks of Vembanad Lake, India’s longest and largest lake.
From the moment one arrives, the resort’s enchanting ambiance draws in. KLR, acclaimed as India’s leading luxury heritage resort and a multiple-time winner of the prestigious World Travel Award, offers an unparalleled escape into timeless elegance.

Walking through its corridors, I was struck by the intricate design, which incorporates materials from over 100 ancestral Kerala homes.
It was an immersive journey into the heart of Kerala’s cultural heritage, seamlessly intertwined with modern luxury.
Located in Kerala's Kottayam district, Kumarakom is famed for its serene backwaters, houseboats, and verdant greenery. This picturesque village offers a unique glimpse into Kerala’s soul, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty. Time seemed to stand still here, making it the perfect retreat into serenity, something I experienced first-hand as I explored the lush surroundings.
The iconic Mani-Chitra-Taal locking system on the doors evoked a sense of nostalgia, adding a unique charm to the luxurious setting.

In November 2013, Kumarakom Lake Resort garnered international attention when King Charles, then Prince Charles, celebrated his 65th birthday here. This accolade, I realised during my stay, was well-deserved, as the resort’s appeal extends beyond borders, attracting high-end international travel agents like Abercrombie & Kent.
The resort’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability was evident throughout. The sprawling 25-acre property reflects Kerala’s architectural heritage, crafted with eco-friendly practices.
The resort employs advanced water conservation techniques, including rainwater harvesting and efficient recycling systems. Energy-saving measures, such as solar panels and energy-efficient lighting, further reduce the resort’s environmental footprint, making my stay both luxurious and eco-conscious.
One of the highlights of my visit was the range of cultural and nature-based activities available at KLR. Feeding rabbits, ducks, and egrets became a delightful morning ritual, while cycling along the winding paths and engaging in fishing sessions brought me closer to the tranquil environment. The traditional ‘kettuvalam’ sunset cruise was a serene experience, accompanied by cultural programmes at ‘Ettukettu’, the resort’s signature restaurant, which left a lasting impression.
An ‘Eight-Roofed House,’ Ettukettu, is an architectural marvel designed in the traditional Kerala style. Its diverse menu caters to an international clientele, featuring Continental, Chinese, Indian, and Arabic cuisines. The breathtaking views of Vembanad Lake provided a stunning backdrop. The restaurant’s farm-to-table approach was particularly impressive, with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients adding a distinct flavour to every dish.
During the summer months, I learned that Kumarakom Lake Resort transforms into a haven for Arab families seeking tranquility. The cultural sensitivity at ‘Ettukettu’ ensures that guests from the Arabian Gulf feel at home, with local Kerala delicacies and Arabic favourites like Lamb Manakish and Shish Taouk featured prominently. This inclusive approach was also evident in the special accommodations provided during Ramadhan, such as a dedicated tent for Muslim guests to observe their traditions comfortably.

Under the leadership of General Manager Sanjay Varma, the resort upholds a strong commitment to inclusivity and cultural respect. This ethos resonated throughout my stay, as I observed how the resort catered to the diverse needs of its guests. The picturesque setting, with the longest frontal view of Vembanad Lake, was a constant reminder of Kerala’s natural beauty and architectural grandeur.
The resort is also home to Ayurmana, an Ayurveda spa renowned for its holistic wellness treatments. Guided by Dr Benny Thomas, the spa offers rejuvenating therapies, including Panchakarma, which detoxifies and revitalises the body. One can also experience the transformative effects of these traditional Kerala therapies, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
A short boat ride from the resort is the renowned Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, home to diverse bird species, including migratory Siberian Storks. My early morning visit to the sanctuary was a serene experience, offering a deeper connection to nature, highlighted by the resort’s backwaters, mangrove forests, green paddy fields, and coconut groves.
Under the visionary leadership of Paul P John, Chairman and Managing Director, Kumarakom Lake Resort continues to thrive as a haven of luxury, culture, and nature. My stay at KLR was more than just a retreat; it was an intimate journey into the grace and timeless beauty of Kerala, where every moment was steeped in cultural richness and natural splendour.
