The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has urged companies and individuals to refrain from hiring anyone who is not sponsored by them. Employing illegal immigrants is considered an anti-national act and is punishable under Omani Labour Law No 53/2023.

In a statement, the ROP mentioned that they are actively working to combat illegal immigration into the Sultanate of Oman by monitoring borders, tracking smugglers and conducting security campaigns in collaboration with other authorities.

Ali bin Salem al Sawai, Director of the Office of the Joint Inspection Team at the Ministry of Labour, emphasised the negative impact of employing non-Omani workers without proper licensing. Such actions can result in fines up to RO 2,000 and prison sentences ranging from 10 to 30 days.

Dr Khalifa bin Saif al Hinai, a legal expert and judge, warned that individuals present in the country illegally may have criminal backgrounds and could be fleeing justice in other countries.

Supporting these individuals in finding work could lead to serious consequences, especially in cases involving arms, drug trafficking, and organised crime.

Dr Al Hinai also highlighted the potential risks associated with hackers who have criminal intentions and records. Enabling illegal workers poses significant economic harm as well, impacting the country's economic stability and security.

The ROP stressed the importance of cooperation from society, citizens and expatriates in combating the employment of illegal immigrants. This collective effort is crucial in protecting everyone from the negative effects of this issue.

Employing illegal workers disrupts social harmony, increases crime rates and hinders national development. Allowing different nationalities to infiltrate Omani society poses a threat to social activities and creates unfair competition in the labour market for legal economic activities.
